This question can apply to a lot of things in the fitness industry. It can apply to if you are trying to gain weight, lose weight, or gain muscle, they always go hand in hand with what you eat. As an example, if you are just trying to lose weight, cutting out carbs almost completely and running on a treadmill for 30 min a day will help you accomplish your goal quite quickly. But if your goal is to gain muscle, sorry to say it, but you need to eat more. But that is not a bad thing. What I recommend is you go online and search up "calorie calculator," this will help you calculate how many calories you should have on a daily basis, for gaining muscle you should eat 200-400 calories over this amount and if you are trying to get shredded or lean out, eat about 200 under that given number. Here are your choices for gaining muscle.
(Eat about 300 more above your maintenance) Dirty bulking is an amazing thing that can help you gain mass quick, of course it most likely will not be all muscle, it will be with almost an equal amount of fat. For this, quite literally, eat anything high in fat, carbs, calories and protein. Also, you're going to have to eat about 5-6 times a day of big meals. Honestly, I would rate this system of bulking a 5/10, its very effective but you're going to have to grind in the gym to lose the fat you gained.
(Eat 200 calories more than maintenance) Lean Bulk has to be my favorite by a longshot. You get the best of both worlds, you get to eat, and you gain muscle at the same time. (Click the link here to learn how to lean bulk)
After both of these, especially the dirty bulking, like all muscle builders, you're going to want to shred down for the summer. So for this, after your bulk you want to re-enter all of the information onto the same site again but with your new weight. That will give you your new maintenance calories. All you have to do after that is eat 200 calories under the given amount and along with still working out, hard, you can be losing about 1-2 lbs a week.
So, to make it really simple.
Dirty bulk - eat A LOT + exercise A LOT = A LOT of Muscle and fat
Lean bulk - eat + hard exercise = more muscle gain than fat gain
Shred/Lean out - caloric deficit + hard workout = keeping most muscle mass and losing fat making you look like a Greek God.
(I also recommend using a calorie tracker during all of this, personally I use an app called "Macro")

I wish I didn't like fettuccini alfredo so much, I'm dirty bulking without meaning to...but without the working out. I like this post, it lays out how to do each thing nicely. I also like your simplified version, it really wraps the whole post up!
